[Grilled Mochi with Mayo]

Now that the New Year celebrations are over, do you have any leftover mochi at home? If you're getting a little tired of the usual ways to eat it, like in ozoni soup or grilled mochi, you should definitely try “grilled mochi with mayo.”

When heated, mochi becomes soft and gooey, pairing perfectly with cheese. Adding the flavor of green onions and the aroma of black pepper creates a sophisticated taste that pairs wonderfully with beer or white wine.

The recipe is very simple. First, cut the mochi into bite-sized pieces and slice the green onions diagonally. Place the green onions and mayonnaise in a bowl, then toss in the mochi pieces, lightly grilled on a grill pan or similar. Then, arrange them in an olive oil-coated gratin dish, top with melting cheese, sprinkle black pepper, and heat in an oven toaster until golden brown to your liking.

The stretchy, melted mochi combines with the mayo and cheese, creating an irresistibly delicious bite you won't be able to stop eating. If plain mayo feels lacking, try adding a little miso or salted kelp. The sweetness of the green onions complements the mayo and cheese, creating a light flavor that keeps you enjoying it until the last bite.

Hasami's Toy Gratin, designed with French toys as its theme, is also perfect as a light appetizer gratin. Its excellent heat retention means it stays piping hot until the very end—a delightful feature. Enjoy it with a cold drink in hand.
