[Shizuoka Prefecture: Head Temple Hokoji]

Hokoji Temple lies northwest of Hamamatsu city center. Its mountain name is Jinnozan. As the head temple of the Hokoji branch of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism, it commands deep devotion. Spanning vast grounds, it proudly displays its majestic presence as a major temple housing 22 buildings designated as National Registered Tangible Cultural Properties.

Completed in 1918, the Main Hall is one of the most magnificent structures in the Tokai region, boasting a width of 32m and a depth of 27m. Its spacious interior allows it to serve as a large-capacity zazen meditation hall. It faces south and stands at the center of the temple grounds. Built in the traditional Hojo style for Zen temple abbots, it features a wide veranda at the front and corridors along the sides and rear. Looking up at its grand roof from below, one feels its solemn, historic presence.

This main hall houses the Shaka Sanzon statues, designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. They were enshrined as the temple's principal image in the late Meiji period. The defining feature of these statues is undoubtedly the splendor and elegance of their gold-lacquered coloring. The depiction of Shakyamuni Buddha wearing a jeweled crown is said to be extremely rare.

Numerous other historic structures are scattered across the expansive grounds, with a designated tour route for visitors to explore. If you have the opportunity, this is definitely a temple worth setting aside time to visit and explore at leisure.
