[Clay Pot Pudding]
I wanted to eat a big, filling pudding, so I picked up a Matsuyama Tokojo's Yukihira Pot #5. I love this pot because of its cute, round shape. Just imagining filling it with pudding makes me feel so happy.
There are various ways to make pudding, such as baking or steaming, but this time I tried making clay pot pudding using residual heat. The ingredients are very simple: eggs, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and a little butter to coat the pot. Crack the eggs into a bowl and whisk them. In a small pot, warm the milk and granulated sugar to body temperature, then add it to the bowl and mix well. Add a few drops of vanilla extract to taste. Coat the pot lightly with butter, then pour the mixture into the pot while straining it. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens. Once the mixture has thickened, cover and continue heating for about 5 minutes. When a faint, sweet aroma begins to emerge, remove from the heat and let cool in the pot's residual heat until set. During the cooling period with the lid on, I was worried whether the pudding would set properly, but it had solidified within about 20 minutes while I was distracted with other tasks.
Matsuyama Tokojo's Yukihira Pot is made from coarse clay from Iga, Mie Prefecture, and retains a lot of air. The slow heating allows it to store heat, and its high insulation properties seem to have helped the pudding set properly.
Enjoying it warm right after it’s made, blowing on it to cool it down, is a pleasure unique to homemade pudding. Once it’s cooled slightly, refrigerating it makes it a firm, sweet, and delicious pudding. Its cute appearance makes it perfect for serving in the pot itself when entertaining guests.
