The fantastic fireworks that bloom in the night sky of summer in Japan have a Japanese sensibility, and are an art of light created by fireworks craftsmen using traditional techniques and new ideas.

Fireworks are said to have been invented in China, and there are various theories as to who first saw fireworks in Japan, such as Tokugawa Ieyasu, who opened the Edo shogunate, or Date Masamune, once powerful ruler in the Tohoku region. In the beginning of the Meiji era, Japan's fireworks technology took a great leap forward with the introduction of various colored light-emitting agents imported from the West, creating the foundation for today's Japanese fireworks, which are said to be the best in the world.

The three major fireworks festivals in Japan are the National Fireworks Festival in Daisen City, Akita Prefecture, which is known as the "city of fireworks," the Tsuchiura National Fireworks Festival in Tsuchiura City, Ibaraki Prefecture, which is held in autumn, and the Nagaoka Festival Grand Fireworks Display in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, which is a symbol of peace and reconstruction, all of which are full of power and attractions.

Many fireworks displays across the country have already been cancelled or postponed this year, but once things have settled down, we would like to go back and see the traditional culture of fireworks, which have been loved as a summer tradition in Japan since the Edo period until today. We hope you will use our various useful tools when you participate in your local fireworks display as well.
